C1/2 (Atlanto-axial) posterior fusions
This section provides patient self-reported outcome data (PROMs) on patients who have undergone C1/2 (atlanto-axial) posterior stabilisation and fusion for painful C1/2 joint arthritis (osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis) unresponsive to conservative management.
The surgery was carried out using C1 posterior arch screw instrumentation, including 29 patients with custom made C1 posterior arch screws.
In two of the 40 patients operated, the C1 posterior arch was found at surgery to be too small to accomodate posterior arch screws and the planned C1 posterior arch fixation was not used. In one case, the C1/2 stabilisation was completed by conversion to C1 lateral mass screws and in the other case by extension of the fusion to include the occiput.
